1st and foremost
we were all so very proud last Saturday night at the Cork Opera House, when Johnny's brother, PADDY KEENAN, was bestowed the great honour of "Traditional Musician of the Year" award from TG4. For those of you outside Ireland, TG4 is the national Irish language television station here. It is a very prestigious award for any musician and was broadcast on Sunday, 17th November. The highlight of the night was, of course, Paddy's appearance, but the night was truly brought to a climax when Paddy was accompanied onstage by Paddy's former BOTHY BAND bandmates: Micheal O'Domhnaill, Triona ni Dhomhnaill, Matt Molloy, Paddy Glackin..and standing in for Donal Lunny was Manus Lunny. Nobody could have wished for a better night!!!
Now, on to other great matters at hand...we are so happy to report that the 1st annual JOHNNY KEENAN BANJO FESTIVAL was a resounding success! Thousands of musicians and fans from all parts of the world desended upon Longford for a weekend absolutely full of music! In addition to the main stage concerts each night, music was ringing out of nearly every pub in Longford Town (and there are nearly 3 dozen pubs in the town!!!). Also, there was music in the Market Square, in the centre of town, both on Saturday & Sunday, and featured great local and international talents. If you weren't able to attend this year, don't fret! We've set the date for next year...26-28 SEPTEMBER 2003! So plan early - everyone is welcome in Longford! ...and in the meantime, there are some photos from this year's innaugral event on the BANJO FESTIVAL page! |
